What Is A Doula?
A doula is an experienced professional who offers emotional support during the latter part of pregnancy, and emotional and physical support to the mother and her partner during labor and birth. She attends the birthing family from early labor until after the baby is born. She instills confidence in the partner, freeing him to be as involved as he wishes.

Doulas offer:
- assistance with preparation of birth plan
- encouragement during the last weeks of pregnancy
- emotional and physical support during labor
- explanation of medical procedures & alternatives
- techniques, suggestions, and comfort measures for pain relief
- techniques and suggestions to encourage labor progress
- support to the father/partner in his/her role
- one-on-one care
- support for the early postpartum period
Birth Help doulas are certified through Doulas of North America International(DONA) and are committed to helping achieve your personal goals and have a safe and satisfying birth experience. Birth Help doulas attend births in Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Opelousas, Hammond, New Orleans, Zachary, and Covington.
Consultation Visit
Many clients want to meet with a doula before making a decision about doula services. You can arrange a consultation appointment by calling 225.768.7686 or sending an email to doula@birthhelp.com. There is no charge or obligation for a consultation.
Doula Service Fee
The Doula Service Fee is $600. Clients who have taken Birth Help's childbirth classes receive a $50 discount. An additional fee will be assessed for births and home visits outside the Baton Rouge area.
A nonrefundable $100 deposit is due with the application (below). The balance of the Doula Service Fee is due at the doula visit unless other arrangements are made.
It is Birth Help's goal to serve all interested birthing women, so financial arrangements are available. Payments can be extended and some discounts are available. If you are in need of a discount or other payment arrangement, please feel open to discussing your needs.
Your doula will provide an insurance form after the birth if you wish to file with your insurance company, since some clients have had success with coverage.
The Doula Service includes:
- telephone / personal doula interview
- application review
- assistance with preparation of your birth plan
- availability of primary and back-up doulas
- doula visit to discuss your birth plan, goals, and the doula's, partner's, and mom's roles during labor
- 24 hour on-call time starting two weeks before your due date
- phone/email contact during on-call time and during labor
- labor support at home/hospital
- postpartum follow-up
Application for Doula Service
To contract for doula services, complete and return a Doula Service Application (below) with a $100 non-refundable deposit. After reviewing your completed application, your doula will meet with you and your partner two to three weeks before your due date. The balance of the Doula Service Fee is due at the doula visit unless other arrangements are made.
